To recognize the contributions of Darrell E. Hoskins (1964- 2020), DVM, DACLAM  and former Chief Scientific Advisor, Comparative Medicine at Transnetyx to the field of laboratory animal science and celebrate the warm friendship and continual support he provided to those in the field, as well as all those around him.

Two awards of up to $10,000 each are available each award cycle.

The award period cannot exceed two years; however, it is possible to request a no-cost extension after submitting the appropriate formal request.

Objective:

To accelerate advances in animal welfare and the 3Rs through original research conducted by veterinary trainees in laboratory animal medicine

Eligibility:

Applicants (Trainee Investigator) must:

  · Be currently enrolled in an ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program.

  · Identify a mentor for the proposed project (Project Mentor) who is identified as Program Faculty in the organizations Training Program Description 

This award is intended to support an independent research hypothesis and not to provide only minor enhancements (e.g., addition of one of many treatment groups or study timepoints) to a larger, funded project.

Criteria for funding will be based on the following:

  · Significance and contemporary relevance of the research question being addressed.

  · Clarity and coherence of the project rationale.

  · Feasibility of the proposal within the given timeline.

  · Qualifications of the applicant and proposed mentor to carry out the proposed research.

  · Relevance and feasibility of the budget request for the proposed activities.

  · Validity and expertise with the experimental methodology and analysis.

Deadlines for 2024:

  · Application submission: January 15, 2024 (11:59PM EST)

  · Notice of award: March 15, 2024

  · Funds distribution: June 15, 2024

Specific project costs may include:

  · Research-related expenses (e.g., laboratory supplies that will be consumed in the course of the project, animal costs and per-diem rates, diagnostic testing fees,  sample shipping fees).

  · Laboratory equipment or specialized computer software purchases

  · Service center or fee-for-service technical support.

  · Courses or training material for the purposes of learning about specialized experimental methodologies or analysis software.

  · Travel related to presentation of research findings.

  · Note – should the project involve genotyping, these services may be performed by Transnetyx at a reduced cost (negotiable upon award announcement).

The following items are unallowable expenses:

  · Indirect/overhead expenses

  · Publication submission fees

  · Salary support for trainees or others involved with the project.

The research budget should match all activities described in the proposal and should explain, in detail, the costs associated with each activity.
